Opportunities
Undergraduate Students
Prospective undergraduate students in the Crandall Fire Ecology Lab should be interested in fire ecology theory and application beyond just participating in prescribed fires. Students must be enthusiastic about engaging intellectually during our lab meetings and through independent projects as well as participating in physically demanding field work often under hot, buggy conditions. There are currently opportunities to contribute to ongoing and new research, develop an independent project, and receive credit (FOR4905). If you are interested, please send an email to Dr. Crandall at raecrandall@ufl.edu and briefly state why you are interested in joining our lab and pursuing an undergraduate research experience. We are an open, accepting lab and try to accommodate and pay a stipend to all students interested in research regardless of past training or experience. Before contacting us, please review this mentor-mentee compact, which succinctly lists expectations.
Ph.D. Candidates (with completed M.S. only)
We do not currently have funding for students to join the Crandall Fire Ecology Lab, but would be willing to help students seek their own funding through federal or University of Florida fellowships. Students work under the lab's guidance to develop their own projects within a broad ecological framework, engage in empirical research grounded in fire ecology, and apply their findings to management and restoration of natural habitats. Our team encourages applications from students who have an M.S. degree and experience/interest in plant population and community modeling. For more information, read about our team and learn more about our diverse research interests.
If you would like to apply for a graduate fellowship, please send an introductory email to raecrandall@ufl.edu and include your CV. The deadline for applying to the University of Florida for fall admission is January 1, so I encourage prospective students to initiate a conversation early in the fall for admission the following year.
Postdoctoral Researchers
We do not currently have funding for postdoctoral researchers, but welcome collaborations on grant proposals and fellowships that align with our broad and diverse research interests. Send an email to raecrandall@ufl.edu if you are interested in discussing a collaboration.
